Innovative Approaches: Teaching Diverse Students

Ange Anderson was a former head of a special school for students aged 2 to 11 with conditions such as PMLD, SLD, ADHD, complex needs, and EBD. 75% of students had autism as a primary or secondary diagnosis. During her time at the school, Ange implemented a range of innovative approaches to teaching diverse students, including Autism, ADHD, ODD, and PDA, leading to significant improvements in the students and establishing the school as a leading specialist in Wales. Today, Ange serves as an SEN advisor for a global VR company and an expert in innovative approaches to teaching diverse students for both schools and families in the UK.

Novel Strategies for Teaching Children with Diverse Needs

In this interview, we will explore Ange’s expertise in innovative approaches to teaching diverse students, including why she believes play is important for neurodiverse children, how play was successfully implemented for PDA/ODD students, the introduction of DIR/Floortime through innovative approaches, the role of sensory profiles in teaching, and the range of innovative approaches that were introduced at the school. These novel strategies for teaching children with diverse needs will provide valuable insights for educators and families.

Training in the first term often presents challenges:

  • Don't want a day out for training when setting up class at the start of the year.
  • Students with neurodiversity may start off dysregulated because the necessary structures and strategies are not yet in place.
  • Educators find themselves playing catch-up while addressing 'behaviours'.
  • Many educators feel overwhelmed.
